Every year on June 14, we commemorate World Blood Donor Day, a tradition that began in 2004 thanks to the collaborative efforts of global health organizations including the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion.
This day also honours the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the pioneering biologist and physician whose discovery of the ABO blood group system and the Rhesus factor revolutionized safe blood transfusion. As we mark 20 years of selfless giving on June 14, 2024, we extend our deepest gratitude to all blood donors for their life-saving gifts.
Ghana’s Blood Donation Landscape: A Call for Action
In Africa, only 5% of the population donates blood regularly, falling short of the WHO’s recommended 10% for maintaining an adequate blood supply. Ghana primarily relies on family replacement donors, a system where patients’ relatives are requested to donate. In 2017, out of 162,226 units of blood collected, only 36% came from voluntary donors. However, there’s a silver lining: in 2023, according to Dr. Shirley Phyllis Owusu-Ofori (CEO of the National Blood Service), voluntary donations rose from 45% to 49% in Ghana’s zonal blood centers.
Eligibility for Blood Donation: Who Can Contribute?
Blood donation is open to most individuals in good health, meeting these criteria:
- Age: Between 18 and 65, with some countries allowing younger or older donors under specific conditions.
- Weight: At least 50 kg, with variations based on the country’s regulations.
- Health: Free from infections, recent tattoos, piercings, or dental procedures.
- Travel: No recent travel to regions with endemic mosquito-borne diseases.
- Behaviors: No engagement in high-risk activities or drug use.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Specific deferral periods apply post-pregnancy and during breastfeeding.
