The Minister of Tourism and Culture, Andrew Agyapa Mercer, is set to inaugurate the inaugural Transnational Cultural Festival, known as the “Sakeva Festival”, in Sekondi-Takoradi on Thursday, June 27.
The Sakeva Festival, a first-of-its-kind arts and cultural event in Sekondi-Takoradi, will feature over 50 artisans showcasing their artworks, thereby promoting the heritage of Sekondi-Takoradi globally.
During a press conference on Monday, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Abdul Mumin Issah, told Channel One News on Monday that the Sakeva Festival is part of the European Union-funded Twin Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project.
This project, a collaboration between Sekondi-Takoradi and Italy’s Parlemo city, aims to safeguard artworks globally and generate jobs through arts.
“This festival is an opportunity STMA is creating for our arts and craftsmen to come and exhibit their talents. It has not been heard of from any assembly that the assembly has supported some arts and crafts producers to be able to produce their works for international exhibition.
“This exhibition is not going to be a nine-day wonder. It is something that we are going to repeat every year. It is going to be an annual affair. This is an opportunity for our arts and craftsmen to improve upon their works, especially the finishing because this is what sells most.”
“Bringing the students on board is another way of expanding the scope and view of our school children for them to know that art is not just drawing, but it is a profession one can take and make a life out of it,” he further stated.
