The Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, has slammed the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government for their silence on the gruesome murders in Wa, Upper West Region.
The area has witnessed the killing of 16 individuals, mostly private security guards, by unknown assailants since 2022.
Despite the growing concern, no arrests have been made, and the government’s inaction has sparked outrage among residents.
The residents, fearful and fed up, are threatening to bar politicians from campaigning in the area if the government fails to take decisive action to stop the killings.
In an interview on Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Dr Pelpuo expressed his disappointment and frustration with the President, Vice President, and Interior Minister Henry Quartey’s apparent lack of concern.
He highlighted the community’s efforts to apprehend the culprits and emphasised the need for urgent action to address the security lapses that have exacerbated the situation.
Dr Pelpuo stressed that the community is forced to seek alternative security measures due to the government’s inaction.
“There’s no assurance at all. The Interior Minister, who was also from the region, didn’t give any assurance. ..The government has not made any announcement or shown any concern, and the president has said nothing, it does seem that it’s a normal occurrence that happened.”
“The thing started from Techiman, moved to Wa, went to Bole and came back to Wa, no pronouncement has been made as to how to tackle the situation. It does look like ‘well, it’s your concern, handle it and that the police are around. That’s the impression I’m getting.”
“But there must be a pronouncement by the Interior Minister by now, there must be a pronouncement by the president, a show of concern by the president or the vice president. None of it is happening and I think that’s the nature of the government we are seeing now. You remember the 8 killings in Techiman, till now, no statement is made at the Presidency,” he stated.
