As part of efforts to combat climate change, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is urging city dwellers to plant trees in their homes.
According to the Assembly, this would help fight the impact of climate change in the capital while improving the quality of air.
The call follows a recent project launched by the assembly, aiming to plant 100,000 trees within a year.
Speaking at a town hall meeting on November 11, 2019, the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah called on the general public to support the move.
“We will provide seedlings and encourage every city dweller to plant a tree. You can either plant it in your house, in front of your house or anywhere that you want to plant the tree. This goes with the saying that when the last tree dies, the last man dies. We may not know the reason why we are dying, but it is possible that we are not getting enough oxygen. I don’t want to bore you with issues of climate change. That is a bit technical so, the idea to plant hundred thousand trees is to restore the forest cover and to provide us with a lot of oxygen but it will also make your city very beautiful,” he added.
Last month, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) announced plans to plant 100,000 trees in the city within a year as part of efforts to improve air quality and mitigate the effects of climate change in the city.
The project, the AMA Chief Executive stated, was a move to help reduce the heat islands that were being detected within the city as well as to make the environment lively to promote walkability in the city.
He is hopeful that, the trees which will be planted will send the right signal that we care about the environment and this would yield great environmental dividends.
