The opposition National Democratic Congress in the Sefwi Wiawso constituency of the Western North Region has rejected the election results declared by the Electoral for the area.
The party has hinted of plans to challenge the results in court.
According to the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Sefwi Wiawso, Paul Evans Aidoo, the results were not a true representation of the will of the people, and so they are rejecting it.
“The NDC totally rejects the full and dishonourable results declared by the constituency returning officer.”
The incumbent Member of Parliament and Minister of State at the office of the President, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, was declared the winner with a total of 29,019 votes as against the NDC’s Paul Evans Aidoo’s 28,947 votes.
Addressing the media on Friday, December 11, 2020, Evans Aidoo said: “what is happening in Sefwi Wiawso constituency did not happen by accident. Before the elections, we received reports of people who were roaming the villages and cautioning the villagers against voting for the NDC candidate. This was in addition to the shameless distribution of items and GH50 per voter to induce people to vote for NPP. When none of these was working in their favour, they resorted to brute force, using the military as a frontline force.”
He stated that the party will serve the Electoral Commission with a notice of court action to contest the outcome.
“A situation, where a whole ballot box vanished like it was taken by a magician will not be allowed to prevail. A situation where a military officer intimidates an electoral officer into declaring uncollated results must not be allowed to prevail. However, as peaceful people, we shall proceed to court to challenge this disgraceful act,” he added
NDC rejects results of 2020 polls; describes election as flawed
The opposition National Democratic Congress has rejected the outcome of the December 7 polls.
According to the party, the election was flawed, and that it does not recognize incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo as the rightfully elected President of Ghana.
Addressing the press late Wednesday evening, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu said: “We roundly reject and outrightly reject the declaration of the sitting president as the winner of the 2020 elections. In due course, our flagbearer will brief the nation and the international community”.
“We want to say that it’s a flawed election and therefore we reject it without any reservation, we reject the presidential elections as announced by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission [Jean Mensa]. And we also want to serve notice that the blatant effort to deny us a parliamentary majority will be fiercely resisted.”
