The family of the late aircraft engineer, Prince Kwabena Kumi has threatened to sue the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Apeatu, if the service fails to indict the officers involved in the alleged murder of their relative.
The family also complained that it had been sidelined in the ongoing prosecution of some five suspects at the Koforidua Magistrate court.
Prince Kwabena Kumi was killed at Akyem Akroso during the Easter season.
The sister of the deceased, Nana Abena Osei Debrah told Citi News that the family has resolved to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
“We won’t sue the Akroso police because they are small flies. We will sue IGP because he is supposed to be responsible for every police officer in this country. So we will start from the top. Maybe when we sue him, together with the Police Service, they will give us answers,” the sister of the deceased aircraft engineer said.
The 34-year-old engineer died mysteriously after his car was allegedly seized by the police at Akroso for suspected drink-driving.
According to the family, the deceased, Prince Kumi, who worked for the African World Airlines, was found dead between Akroso and Asuboa with bullet wounds after his car was seized.
The family further alleged that the police prevented the deceased from boarding any commercial car after his vehicle was impounded.
The family also called on the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu, and the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, to institute a full-scale investigation into the case and ensure justice for the family.
The IGP was acting on the petition from the family of the deceased to investigate the matter, ordered the Police Professional and Standards Bureau (PIPS), to probe the case.
Four suspects remanded
A Koforidua Magistrate Court last week remanded into police custody four of five suspects standing trial for their alleged involvement in the murder of Prince Kumi.
The four, Sampson Anim, the driver of the Hyundai Grace vehicle that transported the deceased when his car was impounded for drink-driving, Ebenezer Asante 32-years, Emmanuel Okyere, 18 years, Samuel Peprah, 27 years, and Frank Konadu, 18 years, were remanded to reappear on May 3, 2018, by the court presided over by his worship Mr Eric Daning.
The fifth accused person Okyere Kwabena Emmanuel, a final year senior high student was granted a police enquiry bail with two sureties to enable him to write the ongoing WASSCE.
Meanwhile, the sister of the deceased said they had not been officially notified of the developments.
“They went to court at Koforidua because they said they had arrested some people. As we speak, who they took to court, why they took them to court, how they are related to the case; the police service didn’t come out to tell us anything although we are the family members of the deceased. The police decided to go to court in our absence. Whoever was arrested if you ask me now, I will tell you I don’t know…because formally nobody has told me anything,” she added.
Aircraft engineer to be buried today
The deceased will be buried today.
“We are going to bury him on Saturday, and we still do not have any tangible answers,” she added.
