The Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has stated that he has great confidence in his evidence against NPP Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.
Muntaka said he has done his part in ensuring that Kennedy Agyapong is punished for his alleged contemptuous statement against Parliament.
Speaking to Citi News after appearing before parliament’s Privileges Committee tasked to investigate the matter, Muntaka Mubarak said he was optimistic that the committee will deal fairly with the matter.
“I appeared before the committee as a witness and I have to substantiate all that I have said, and I have to identify the document and all that I presented to them. They looked at it and fortunately because we had a video, it had to be played so that everybody hears what is in it. I have done my part,” he said.
“They asked me questions and I answered the questions. It is now for the committee to determine that what I have put before them and what they have seen amounts to what I proposed on the floor of being contemptuous. It is my fervent hope that looking at the tape and listening to its content and the conduct of our own colleague, I want to believe that the committee will come to that determination,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, MP for Sekondi, who failed to confirm whether a prima facie case had been established against Kennedy Agyapong, said the committee will officially communicate to the public in the coming days.
The committee is expected to hold another meeting on 3rd July, where Kennedy Agyapong is expected to appear.
How Kennedy Agyapon’s woes started
Kennedy Agyapong earlier this month reportedly described Parliament as “useless” for having Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu as its Majority leader on Accra-based Net2 TV, which belongs to him.
But the Assin Central MP contends that his comments were taken out of context.
He also described Muntaka Mubarak as dumb for referring him to Parliament’s Privileges Committee over the purported insult.
“He [Muntaka Mubarak] is a dumb MP and now, I will take him on one on one. Let him go to the Privileges Committee that I Kennedy Agyapong say he is a dumb MP because he did not even listen to the context of the issue and just dragged the matter.”
