The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all heads of Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the region to conduct regular roll calls to check the movement of students in boarding facilities.

The Directorate said it has noted with serious concern the rate at which students especially boarders sneak out of school at odd hours.

According to the Directorate, its checks revealed that students who sneak out of school to betting centers engage in vices such as smoking, gambling, tramadol, and alcohol abuse.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bPpK8fHpd3oOpOB9rW00oXRO3TQUnrvt”]The instruction comes after a student of the Effiduase Senior High School Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region was stabbed to death.

Staff and students of the school on Wednesday, September 27, 2018, were left in a state of shock after 18-year-old Derrick Adjei Emmanuel was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant.

The deceased met his death when he sneaked out of school to watch a football match at a betting center.

According to police, the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood by one of his mates around 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 27th September 2018.

Although police are yet to make an arrest, the regional education directorate wants all heads in schools to intensify the supervision of their students.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ashanti Regional office of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mark Ofori said the directive has become necessary following a stabbing incident at the Effiduase Senior High School recently.

“The directive was issued when the incident at Effiduase Senior High School happened when a guy was stabbed. As part of the revelations, it was like he went outside the school compound and that incident happened. We have to alert our various heads of second cycle institutions so that they will do a regular roll call so that at least from time to time, they will be in school as they are supposed to,” he explained.

He said the directorate will deploy officers from its inspectorate department to visit the schools to ensure all heads comply with the directive.

Mr. Ofori warned that students who leave school without permission will be sanctioned.

“Within the confinement of every institution we work within rules and regulations. As it was stated in the directive, if a student flouts the rules and regulations of his or her school, there are stipulated sanctions to that effect. The breaking of bounds has its own punitive action that needs to be taken against the student. So base on the rules and regulations that govern that particular school per the standard that we have in GES, I believe such sanctions will be applied”, he warned.

The school heads have been directed to conduct the roll call twice in a day and submit their reports to the Directorate on a weekly basis.

Meanwhile, the Effiduase Police Command has since invited some students for questioning following the stabbing incident.
