The grand finale of the MTN Pulse/HR Focus Business Challenge, a competition that brings tertiary institutions together to compete in business cases is officially over.

The competition, which started with nine universities in the preliminary stages saw three universities; University of Ghana Business School, University of Professional Studies Accra, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology moving on to the finals.

The programme garnered a huge attendance and had two sessions – the Business Challenge and the Career Development session.

The career development session, which sought to equip the students and job seekers with the necessary tools for career advancement, had Mrs. Joyce Awuah, Senior HR Manager, Recruitment – MTN Ghana, spoke on “How to win in an interview and what to consider when choosing a career.”

She advised the students to pursue continuous learning; prompting the need to adjust to this fast-moving world. She highlighted that employers are hiring a fit for the company culture and a fit for the organisation thus one must position him or herself in that direction. She also encouraged attendees to stay informed by reading, going to seminars and meetings. She stressed on networking by talking to others in their field of interest.

The Business Challenge took place thereafter. It was tense as the varsities, represented by 5 students each, battled it out in solving the case of the day. The participants from the University of Ghana took the stage and dealt with the business case of the day. This was followed by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and University of Professional Studies Accra respectively.

Prior to that participants were quarantined; far from the event centre to ensure an equitable chance for all.  Judges on the day were Mr. John Appiah, CEO of A-League Consult; Mr. Emmanuel Awumee, CEO of SESIL Consult, and Mrs. Joyce Awuah Senior HR Manager, Recruitment – MTN Ghana. They quizzed and measured performance based on creativity, teamwork, feasibility, innovation, and presentation.

Also speaking was Mrs. Regina Honu, CEO of Soronko Solution, who touched on “Making the Most of Me.” Mrs. Honu walked participants through her success story. She encouraged participants to find their purpose and develop a vision. She accentuated the need to overcome your fears and take risks. She also emphasized time management, particularly amongst women in respect of working and taking care of the home and children.

At the end of the day, UPSA emerged the MTN Pulse-HR Focus Business Challenge winners, a second win in three years. They walked away with a winner’s plaque, cash prizes, souvenirs from sponsors, phones, certificates, internship slots and many others, while runners-up were awarded cash prizes, modems, souvenirs from sponsors and certificates.

The grand finale of the MTN/HR Focus Business Challenge was sponsored by MTN Pulse, L’AINE Services, Business Television Africa, Kasapreko, Ghana Crusader, and Radio Universe and powered by Focus Digital.
