Konkombas in the Mamprugu area in the Northern Region have declared their support for the creation of the North East Region out of the existing Northern Region.

They are thus urging eligible residents to vote massively for the division of the region in the upcoming referendum.

Speaking at a press conference, the spokesperson for the Konkombas in the area, Emmanuel Gulari, expressed concern about the lack of development in the area.

He expressed optimism that in carving out the North East region, there will be unity and development.

They also used the opportunity to remind President Nana Addo of a petition which was presented to him through the Northern Regional Minister seeking for Gbintiri to be made the District capital as well as a constituency after the creation of the North East Region.

Mamprugu is one of the areas earmarked to be part of the proposed North East region. Other areas that will be affected include East Mamprusi and West Mamprusi Municipalities, Yunyoo-Nasuan, Bunkpurugu- Nakpanduri and Cheriponi Districts.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled Thursday 27th of December for a referendum on the creation of some new regions in the country.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jean Mensah, has assured Ghanaians that the necessary measures are being taken to ensure successful referendums for the creation of six regions.

“It is important to emphasize that we are at the final stages of our preparation towards the conduct of the referendum on the creation of new regions on Thursday 27th of December.

“This includes the establishment of a legal framework for the referendum, namely the C.I 109, the revision of the voters’ register, application for votes transfer and proxy, requirement and training of key staffs and temporary staffs,” she said.

The Electoral Commission (EC) earlier in December revealed the colours for the ballots for the referendum.

For the creation of a region to take effect, there would have to be at least a 50 percent voter turnout, and  80 percent of voters must vote ‘yes’.
