All Nations University (ANU) in Koforidua has facilitated the training of girls in Technical and Vocational Institutions in Information Communication and Technology ICT to commemorate the 2019 International Women’s Day celebration.
This was to help bridge the gender gap in engineering, science and technology and to also to empower young ladies to pursue science-related programmes.
The thirty students drawn from some second cycle Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutions in the Eastern Region were taken through mentoring sessions, website development, mobile application development and Google forms for businesses by a team of ICT experts.
Delivering the Keynote address, the Manager for Women in Engineering at a the ANU-Space Systems Laboratory, Mrs Sharon Sappor – Quaye stressed on the essence of harnessing the potentials of the 21st-century woman through ICT.
“As the theme for this year’s celebrations by the United Nations ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change’, this focuses on innovative ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, hence ANU on this day wish to focus on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the field of science, technology and innovation.”
“Innovation and technology provide unmatched opportunities and yet trends designate that a growing gender digital division and women are misrepresented in the field of science, technology, mathematics, engineering and design. This goes a long way to deter women from developing and influencing their kind so as to transform society.”
Mrs Sharon Sappor-Quaye also encouraged the participants to come out with innovative ideas to create more opportunities and options in their chosen field of studies.
“In this 21st century where electronic technology has shrunk the planet earth to the extent that time has ceased and space has vanished making the earth turn into a global village. A student vying to run a fashion line can have the additional advantage of knowing how to design a website for her businessThis will not only equip her to showcase her work with her immediate community but also the world at large,” she added.
