The Department of Gender in the Central Region in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has organized a two-day workshop aimed at sensitizing media men on the need to be sensitive with their coverage of gender-based issues.
Media personnel were taught to avoid stereotyping in their reportage at the workshop.
Speaking to Citi News during the two-day workshop, the Central Regional Director for the Department of Gender, Madam Thywill Eyra Kpe said when the media is knowledgeable about gender-based issues it would enhance their coverage of such issues.
“We engaged the media for the past two days to deepen their knowledge on issues of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare especially of girls, and Child Marriage,” the Regional Director for Gender noted.
According to Madam Thywill Eyra Ekpe, the two-day workshop also seeks to remind the media of Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) and the National Media Commission(NMC) code of ethics.
Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and the Co-ordinator for Advocacy and Outreach (CEGRAD) also urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage adding that they must avoid entrenching stereotypes.
“The media must again avoid misrepresentation of facts and sensationalism in gender issues since it takes away the real facts from the story,” Dr. Yaa Oduro said.
