Some members of the local chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Education, Winneba says it will not tolerate unwelcome interference from the national UTAG.
The lecturers have condemned the National UTAG President, Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah, over the association’s stance in what has been described as the UEW leadership crisis.

According to the members, the National UTAG leadership incited the students’ protest which resulted in the destruction of properties on campus and the school shut down.
UTAG has among other things also called for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni and petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over conflict of interest claims made against the university’s Governing Council Chair, Prof. E. N. Abekah.
Addressing the media on the campus of UEW, Eric Sakyi Nketiah, a member of UTAG and a Senior Lecturer, called on UTAG to stop meddling in the affairs of the University.
He insisted that it was unethical and morally wrong for the UTAG National President to take a stance in the matter.
“We admonish UTAG national executives to desist from blindly meddling in the affairs of UEW; inflaming passions and causing unnecessary fear and panic for students, lectures, staff and members of the university community as well as the good people of Winneba.”
Status of call on CHRAJ
Meanwhile, CHRAJ says it is yet to receive any official petition from UTAG with respect to their allegations of conflict of interest against the Prof. Abekah.
UTAG, among other things, argues that the Council Chairman abused his authority to acquire a full professorial status.
But the CHRAJ Boss, Joseph Whittal, tells Citi News the Commission will pursue the case when they receive an official complaint.
“UTAG will have to also bring a complaint detailing what they think is conflicting about the persons they want to complain against then our mandate will be triggered,” he explained.
