A group calling itself the Concerned Students and Alumni of the University of Education, Winneba has welcomed the decision to reinstate three dismissed staff of the school.
But the group is unhappy the Vice-Chancellor of UEW is still at post.
[contextly_sidebar id=”FilhIDSMaye0I4wexynucGiNrthzbllR”]In an interview with Citi News, leader of the group, Victor Osei Agyemang said although they want the Vice Chancellor to resign, a planned demonstration to demand such action has been postponed.
“We are still calling for the resignation Vice-Chancellor and Council Chairman of the University. We are satisfied and happy the three have been reinstated. Postponing of our demonstration is not because of what they have done, but we are re-scheduling our next demonstration either in Accra or Winneba and we would be announcing the date soon,” he said
He also complained about a decision of the university to make students write their mid-semester exams a day after reopening.
“The university doesn’t have students interest in mind. How can students travel from the Northern Region and they asking students not report on Saturday or Sunday but Monday and expect the students to write the mid-semester exams the following day. At least there should been a three-day interval for students to relax their minds and prepare for the exams,” Mr. Osei Agyemang said.
On April 3, 2019, the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) reinstated three lecturers who were dismissed.
The reinstated lecturers included Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku and Prof Ephraim Avea Nsoh
The school is also set to reopen on April 8, 2019, after it was shut down following student protests over the dismissal of some of the lecturers.
Dismissals and protests
Students of the UEW protested the sackings of some senior staff of the school by the Vice Chancellor.
The situation led to a series of demonstrations by students, including a violent one that resulted in the destruction of school properties.
The demand was also accompanied by calls for lecturers and other staff who have been sacked to be immediately reinstated.
In the heat of the moment, some students felt the sackings were an act of sabotage adding that they will demonstrate until their demands are met.
Students and lecturers have been insisting that the Vice-Chancellor of the school, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, must resign for normalcy to return at the school.
