The railway fare for the Accra-Tema stretch has been reduced from GHc5 to GHc3 by the Ministry of Railways Development.
The move is aimed at increasing patronage of the railway service.
At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, the Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey said there is room for improvement on the Accra-Tema service.
Addressing journalists in Accra on the work of his ministry, Joe Ghartey, said the government was considering scraping flat rates too.
“Now even with the GH¢3 per person, they’ll look at it. They won’t look at it in terms of reducing but I agree with you that the flat rate has its own problems and you must put in a system that allows people to pay different rates for different parts of the ride.”
Mr. Ghartey assured that work on the rail sector “is work in progress” and that “we have made the platform more user-friendly.”
He disclosed that president Akufo-Addo has allocated 230 million Ghana cedis for the purchasing of new coaches which will start operating once the projects are completed.
