Ashantigold and Medeama Sporting Club will meet for the third time this season in what’s now called a “Betway Derby” after both sides progressed to the quarter finals of the NC Special Tier 2 competition.
The Miners reached this stage courtesy wobbly but assured 2-1 win over regional neighbours New Edubiase FC at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
Veteran Sriker, Shafiu Mumuni, got AshGold going in the first minute but Abdul Rahman levelled for Edubiase as the game ended 1-1 at half time.
But Emmanuel Owusu made the result certain for Kjetil Zachariassen’s men with a goal in the 49th minute after scoring a rebound from a Mark Agyekum shot that was saved.
Medeama on the hand, endured the drama of a 9-8 penalty shoot-out before knocking out Samartex to book a quarter-final berth in the Tier II Special Competition.
Goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi proved the hero with a last save to deny the visitors a famous triumph at the Tarkwa NA Aboso park.
It will be the 3rd meeting between the two sides, both sponsored by bookmaking giants Betway, who have already met twice in the NC Special Zone A competition.
The Miners emerged overwhelming victors, getting a 0-0 result away from home before thumping the Mauves and Yellows 4-1 at home in the reverse fixture with Shafiu scoring all four goals; a hat-trick and an own goal.
The 3rd installment of this developing rivalry, slated for Sunday 9th June, 2019, promises unsuspecting spectacle with the winner moving a step closer to winning the competition and more significantly, a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
