The Ghana Association of Doctors in Residency is appealing to the general public to support its members with Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to aid in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the government’s distribution of 10,000 PPEs and the acquisition of 50,000 more, the Association says this effort must be complemented, as all health workers across the country are at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 due to their work.
The President of the Ghana Association of Doctors in Residency, Dr. Bernard Hammond, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, stressed on the need for the abundant supply of equipment such as face masks and gloves, amongst others across board.
“For instance, if I came from the USA two weeks ago and I didn’t find time to go but partying and all that and now I’m finding symptoms may be fever, running nose, I will just go to a nearby hospital and if I tell them my travel history, they should protect themselves, there should be some Personal Protective Equipment. So that’s the reason why I’m saying the PPE’s should not be just restricted to the designated COVID-19 treatment centres. it should be across board because if I go to a private hospital and I tell them my travel history, effectively I have shut down a health centre that people can’t receive care from who may have non-COVID related diseases.”
Confirmed cases in Ghana
15 new cases of Coronavirus have been confirmed in Ghana.
The number is made up of 12 persons who were mandatorily quarantined by the government and three other persons in the general population.
This increases the total case count of the disease to 68 in Ghana with two deaths.
“The sudden spike in case incidence is as a result of the mandatory quarantine and compulsory testing for all travelers entering Ghana, as directed by the President,” the Ghana Health Service reported.
