The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ghana has donated over 700 dignity kits to the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations at the Accra Rehabilitation Centre.
The donation forms part of the organization’s efforts to mitigate the challenges the impact of COVID-19 on persons with disability in the Ghanaian society which has been severe.
Presenting the kits comprising of soap, face towels, male and female condoms, face masks, hand sanitizers, underwears among other personal effects, the Deputy Representative of UNFPA Ghana, Agnes Ntibanyurwa said the items presented is a token of the agency’s unflinching support to persons with disabilities.
She cited challenges such as lack of access to food, hygiene products, and access to family planning services as those that persons with disabilities have had to deal with throughout the period, noting that, unwanted pregnancies could also see a surge among persons with disabilities hence the support.
The Executive Director of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Rita Kyeremah Kusi who received the items on behalf of all the disability organizations expressed her appreciation to UNFPA Ghana for the continuous support to the Federation and reaching out to PWDs during these uncertain times.
Meanwhile, the Regional Public Health Nurse, Madam Comfort Kwegir Aggrey, educated the audience on the importance of family planning, the reactivated Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DoVVSU)of the Ghana Police Service hotline (0551000900) and COVID-19 prevention.
Member organizations of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organization include: Ghana Blind Union, Ghana National Association of the Deaf, Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled and the Mental Health Society of Ghana.
