The Effutu MP, Alex Afenyo-Markin, has secured a judgement in his favour after suing the National Democratic Congress parliamentary aspirant in the constituency, James Kofi Annan, for defamation.
Mr. Annan is also to pay damages amounting to GHS20,000 and additional costs of GHS 5,000 to the incumbent MP.
Mr. Annan, at a press conference on March 17, alleged that Mr. Afenyo-Markin was planning to taint his image with allegations of financial malfeasance to hurt his chances of winning the elections.
Following from that, Mr Afenyo-Markin filed a defamation suit at the Winneba Magistrate Court.
In the court’s judgement, it was ordered that Mr. Annan “retracts the defamatory statement issued on the 17th of March 2020 and render an apology to the Plaintiff [Mr. Afenyo-Markin] between 28th August 2020 and 31st August 2020.”
Mr. Annan is to publish the apology “in the same media he used for the press conference of 17th March 2020 including Adom TV, Joy TV, United Television and various online media portals which carried the defamatory publication.”
