Former President Jerry John Rawlings has urged the government to expedite action on efforts to protect coastal communities from sea erosion.
Mr. Rawlings said the construction of a sea defence wall along the coastline of the country will stop the fast erosion of lands occupied by local residents.
Speaking during a visit from a delegation of Parliament to commiserate with his family on the passing of his mother, the Former President called on the Speaker to personally pay a visit to the various coastal communities.
He decried the fast rate at which coastal communities were losing lands due to sea erosion with properties consistently being lost as a result.
“It’s happening bit by it. I am sharing this with you, because when it happens to you that is when you appreciate how crucial it is to have soil under your feet,” he told a Parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye at his residence,” he said.
“Try and persuade [him] Mr. Speaker and a few others. Get yourself a comfortable bus and go on a trip to that place and get out and see [things] for yourself. We can do better,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye has extended his condolences to former president Rawlings and his family.
He said Parliament will support the family through the funeral.
The delegation from Parliament included the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; and the Wa West legislator, Joseph Yileh Chireh.
