The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has postponed the 2020 launch of its ‘Light Up The City’ Christmas project scheduled for today Friday December 18, 2020.
According to the assembly, the decision is as a result of the vandalism of some of the installations it had done for the project by some protesters in the capital.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA said the event which will see some major spots in Accra decorated with Christmas lightening “but with the current happenings, the event has been rescheduled to protect life and property.”
The assembly has a new date for the event will be announced later but it will, together with its partners work to “bring the joy and good tidings of Christmas to all.”

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Kiottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AyWMA) and Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly (ABWMA) wish to bring to the attention of the general public as well as all stakeholders of the postponement of the “Light Up The City 2020″ media launch which was scheduled for tomorrow 18th December 2020.
This follows the current political protests and vandalism of installations meant for the light Up The City” project in the metropolis.
The Christmas season in the City of Accra last year witnessed a significant innovation, including the visual transformation of some major road corridors and monuments into thrilling Christmas lighting displays which both residents and patrons of the city were very delighted to behold but with the current happenings, the event has been rescheduled to protect life and property.
Towards this end, the AMA and its sister assemblies, appeals to all demonstrators to exercise restraint when protesting around the installations to ensure that they are not destroyed since the ‘Light Up The City” project is a private-sector funded activity.
Despite the current undertones, the AMA, Jandel Ltd and its partners will continue to work hard to bring the joy and good tidings of Christmas to all.
Formal communication will be sent out to all participating partner corporate institutions in due course on a new date for the launch of the “Light Up The City 2020”.
