Grazing cattle threatening Green Ghana project in Bono Region – Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission in the Bono Region says the government’s Green Ghana project may not achieve its intended purpose due to the activities of cattle grazers in the area.

According to the Commission, cattle feed on the new seedlings, which are planted to achieve the government’s goal of restoring Ghana’s depleted forest cover.

Speaking to Citi News, the Bono Regional Forestry Manager, Isaac Nobel Essun, indicated that the activities of the herdsmen are hampering the campaign.

“They are destroying the seedlings that we have planted, and they destroy everything within their path. They feed on the grass, but their activities also destroy the small seedlings that they have planted.”

Mr. Essun noted that the Regional Security Council, security agencies, and various municipal and district security councils are helping to engage the herders.

He added that some perpetrators are being made to face the law.

“We’re talking to them to leave and there have been a few arrests which we are prosecuting. Some are still under investigation.”

About five million seedlings were planted under the Green Ghana Project in 2021.
