The National Fisheries Association of Ghana wants the Ghana Navy to protect fishermen and their vessels on the high seas following recent reports of pirate attacks.
The fishermen say pirates are reported to have attacked a vessel in Ivory Coast giving indications that they may attack fishermen in Ghana.
Speaking at a meeting with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House, the Association said the Ghana Navy will be needed.
“We are getting signals that the pirates are coming back, so we hope to go back to the Navy and see what it is that we could do together to carry that process forward. It’s given us a cause to worry. The other issue has to do with the fact that we use to fish in Benin a lot. But because of the pirates, we are unable to do so anymore,” Richester Nii Armah Amarfio, National Fisheries Association of Ghana.
A Ghanaian fishing vessel, the Panofi Frontier, was attacked and its crew taken hostage in 2020.
The vessel is said to have been fishing in Benin waters when it was attacked by the pirates who captured six crew members; five Koreans and one Ghanaian.
It is still unclear the destination of the pirates, but a highly placed source close to the company which owns the vessel, Panofi Company Limited, tells Citi News that the pirates are believed to be headed towards Nigeria.
