The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate-elect for Ablekuma Central and Deputy Director of Communications at the Presidency, Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, has outlined the circumstances that led to his victory in the just-ended parliamentary primaries in orphan constituencies.
During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Sackey, who made inroads months before the primary, highlighted the strategies he employed to secure the win.
Furthermore, he mentioned that lessons learned from his coverage of elections, spanning over a decade, played a crucial role in his success.
“It’s not about money; it’s about having a good strategy, plan, and taking the people seriously. And I think that is what helped in this particular election. We have been doing this for quite a long while, from 2007, through the 2008 elections, covering elections since 2008. It’s the strategies that we might have learned from all these years that did the magic.”
Mr. Sackey indicated that he has been eyeing the seat for a year now.
“For eyeing the seat, I should tell you that it’s just been a year now. But you need to know things happening in the constituency. In terms of your ability and strength, you need to be a formidable force to reckon with within the party itself. There should be some basic things you might have gone through in terms of nurturing the constituency, your contributions to the party, and we have been doing this all the way from 2007.”
He expressed his readiness to change the fortunes of the constituency, as well as the well-being of the constituents if elected.
The presidential staffer further emphasized the traits he picked up from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to guide his life.
“No, for me, it’s the influence from my boss, the President [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo]. I have been working for him all these years. And I think that the best that he could have done for all of us is to influence us positively, and I think that is what we are seeing. If you work with a leader who is very diligent and committed to his work, basically, some things of his influence your decisions in life. And Parliament is about law and communication, and I think that these are some of the things we can do to support our communities,” he told host Bernard Avle.
Jefferson Sackey, who had one of the huge billboards spread across town before the party’s parliamentary primaries, rejected claims of being a rich man.
Mr. Sackey explained that his billboards and posters were supported by an NPP group within the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association.
“All the billboards, posters, and brochures you see were supported by an NPP group within the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association,” he explained.
Jefferson Sackey will face off with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Dan Abdul-Latif, in the 2024 polls.
Delegates of the NPP across the country went to the polls on Saturday, December 2, 2023, to vote for their parliamentary candidates in orphan constituencies. The elections were supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC).
In Ablekuma Central, the Jubilee House staffer, Jefferson Sackey, polled 539 votes, while Ebenezer Nartey had 441 votes, Collins Amoah got 493 votes, and Larry Anyetei Adjei polled 11 votes.
