The Ghana National Fire Service has commissioned a mechanized borehole for the Nkawkaw Fire Station in the Kwahu West Municipality.
Firefighters in the Municipality have been grappling with water challenges hindering their operations over the years.
Personnel at the Nkawkaw fire station always had to rush to other stations to refill fire engines before returning to accident scenes, affecting their swift response and ability to fully extinguish fires.
As a result, GNFS has commissioned a mechanized borehole to address the challenges faced by the fire station.
In an interview with Citi News after the commissioning, the Eastern Regional Fire Service Commander, ACFO Jennifer Naa Yarley Quaye, assured the fire station of constant water supply and stated that they will no longer rely on pressure from hydrants or travel long distances to refill fire engines.
She highlighted the significance of the borehole, urging civil society groups, both local and foreign, to support other fire stations in running their operations effectively.
She also urged authorities of Senior High Schools to allow Fire Personnel to educate students on fire safety as schools resume academic work.
According to her, recent fire outbreaks in various SHS campuses are due to the use of electrical gadgets such as irons, cookers, and mobile phones.
ACFO Quaye stated that most schools allow students to bring rice cookers to schools without any knowledge of possible consequences.
“I will tell the headmasters and headmistresses that they should check the items that students bring to school, especially mobile phones because lately, we have been experiencing fires in schools. I think some of these fires are due to electrical faults and are a result of the use of irons and cookers.”
