NPP hopeful of increasing seats in Greater Accra Region

The Greater Accra Regional branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is hoping to increase its parliamentary seats from the current 14 to 21 in the upcoming general elections.

Greater Accra Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom hinted that the party will deploy effective strategies to achieve its target in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

This follows the governing party holding primaries to elect parliamentary candidates for constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament on Saturday January 27, 2024

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the parliamentary primaries held in the Amasaman Constituency, Divine Agorhom assured that the party will do all it can to swing the region in its favor in the 2024 elections.

“Over the years, if you study the trend, the Greater Accra keeps swinging between the NPP and of course, the NDC. In 2016, we won…we had about 21 seats. Unfortunately for us, 2020 didn’t go well for us. We dipped and we got to 14 seats. As we speak now, we are in Amasaman, a constituency which hitherto belongs to the NDC. We worked so hard to win it in 2020 and I am hoping that we will be able to continue working hard to maintain our hold on it. It is the same situation in a place like Bortianor. We won it in 2016 and managed to maintain our hold on it in 2020 and we are working towards getting it again in 2024. Now we have 14 seats and they [the NDC] have 20 seats. We are hoping that at the end of the 2024 elections, we should be able to get back a minimum of 7 of the seats that we lost. If we are able to maintain our hold on the 14 and we get an additional 7 then of course we have the 21 seats that we were having,” he stated.

Although Divine Agorhom acknowledges the difficulty of increasing the party’s parliamentary seats in the Greater Accra region as it maybe a herculean task, he remains optimistic that the NPP will win a majority of the seats in the swing region.
