Member of Parliament for Akwapim South, Osei Bonsu Amoah has expressed disapproval of the former President John Mahama’s criticisms of the President’s letter to Parliament requesting them not to transmit the bill for his assent.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ criticized the content of the letter by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Secretary Nana Asante Bediatuo to Parliament.
He argued that the President’s Secretary lacks the authority to issue such directives, as Parliament operates independently.
He emphasized that the action showed disrespect towards Parliament and its Clerk, undermining the principles of good governance.
During an interview on The Big Issue on Citi TV, Mr Amoah referenced past practices of correspondence between the Secretary to the President and Parliament, countering former President John Mahama’s criticism of the process.
He stated that the NDC flagbearer erred in his comments as the President’s Secretary’s duty is a regular practice.
“Even before this matter in Parliament, there were comments by former President John Mahama that he was surprised that the Secretary to the President could write to Parliament. Some of us were surprised until we were able to show that when it comes to sending bills to the President for assent, the clerk writes to the Secretary to the President.
“The Secretary to the President will then respond to, whether there are issues to it or the President has assented to it. I have copies of such correspondence, even in the previous administration. So that issue cannot be an issue we should raise anywhere,” he told host Selorm Adonoo.
