The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has urged the Electoral Commission to improve its communication strategies to ensure a peaceful 2024 election.
This call comes after a meeting between commissioners of the Electoral Commission and members of the council, where discussions were held on ways to enhance the electoral process.
Addressing the press after the meeting, the chairman of the Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Apostle Eric Nyamekye indicated that the commission ought to take charge of communicating decisions from IPAC and not leave that to the political parties.
He stressed the need for the commission to educate the public on important electoral matters such as the use of indelible ink and the prevention of minors from voting.
“One of the main suggestions was education, education education. We think that the EC should always go ahead of all of their politicians and so when they have an IPAC meeting for one, they should issue a communiqué. And so that one comes out and people know that this is what happened and for them to be reacting to what Politicians are saying like issues on the indelible ink for one. Not many Ghanaians actually understand it and so things like that we want them to go out, and then educate.
In response, the commission has revealed that processes have begun to make sure the proposed reform for elections including the change of voting date and non-use of indelible ink is possible by 2028.
Chairperson of the commission, Jean Mensa, stated that the reform was proposed following discussions with various political parties and stakeholders and that the commission is working towards implementing it by 2028.
The commission also explained that while there was some division among stakeholders regarding when the reform should be implemented, they have decided to prioritize the 2028 election for the changes.
