Swedru Senior High School, famously known as ‘Swesco’, renowned for being the first Ghana Education Trust school established by Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has celebrated its 65th anniversary with great enthusiasm and nostalgia.
The event, which took place on the school’s campus, was a week-long celebration filled with memorable activities that brought together old and current students, staff members, and other stakeholders.
The festivities commenced with a candlelight procession, where alumni and students marched through the school streets, reminiscing about their experiences. The theme for the event was ‘Building a Resilient Educational Institution in a Challenging Global Economy; The Gains and Challenges of the Swesco Journey’.
Piesie John Oteng-Nyame, the guest speaker, highlighted the importance of teachers imparting lessons that will keep students relevant in the future. He emphasized the need to balance the transmission of old values and behaviour with creativity and improvement for the betterment of society.
“The challenge now is how to achieve balance in the transmission of the old values and behaviour to the new generation, yet at the same time, how to train them not to be stuck in the old ways but to be creative and improve the society in which they live.”
Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, the headmistress of the school, praised the active participation and support of the old students and alumni. She encouraged them to continue supporting the maintenance of the school’s infrastructure, as collaboration between all parties has been vital for the school’s success.
“The collaboration between the old students, board, management, and staff has been the glue because when that collaboration is there, each group is very interested in what happens, and at the end of the day, this is what we see has happened here”.
The Speech and Prize Giving Day recognized and celebrated outstanding achievements, with students and teachers receiving awards for their academic accomplishments and contributions.
A cultural display by students showcased Ghanaian traditions, while evenings were filled with music and dance celebrations enjoyed by old students.

The celebration concluded with a Thanksgiving Service, where the Swesco community expressed gratitude for the school’s rich history, dedicated educators, and bright future.
