The Chief Manager of the Low-Income Customer Support Department at Ghana Water Ltd., Faustina Boachie, has pledged to address water supply disparities between prosperous and less privileged communities.
Her commitment follows the recent World Water Day celebration organized by the Embassy of Denmark, focusing on the theme “Water for Peace,” highlighting water’s crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity.
During her address, Faustina Boachie emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by many residents, especially in low-income urban areas, who lack access to clean water and often rely on polluted sources.
She highlighted the government’s efforts to upgrade her unit to a full-fledged department, dedicated to advocating for the water needs of these communities.
“We are witnessing the disparities in water supply between prosperous and less privileged communities a gap that not only reflects economic divides but also has the potential to fuel tensions within our society,” Boachie stated.
She also commended the Danish government for its continuous support, especially in ensuring equitable water supply services. Boachie highlighted the company’s achievements, including facilitating over 25,000 heavily subsidized water connections in the last five years, benefiting more than a million people.
Meanwhile, Vibeke Sandholm Pedersen, Deputy Head of Mission at the Danish Embassy, disclosed an ongoing project to develop a drinking water plant in Aveyime. This project, supported by the Danish government, will provide drinking water to an estimated 1.2 million people in the eastern part of Greater Accra, including Tema.
“Our Strategic Sector Cooperation on water, which has been running since 2019, is instrumental in assisting Ghana in establishing a more reliable and strong water sector by matching technical staff from Denmark and Ghana for knowledge exchange,” Pedersen added.
The project development and financing facility of Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) is conducting a feasibility study with Ghana Water Limited for the development of the drinking water plant in Aveyime, which will become the third strategic leg of water supply for Greater Accra.
