The Coalition of Concerned Nurses and Midwives Trainees has called on the government to be swift with the payment of arrears owed to its members as promised.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at a meeting with nurses and midwives, promised that the Finance Ministry would transfer over GHC177 million to pay allowances to nursing trainees on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
In an interview with Citi News, one of the conveners of the Coalition, Joel Kpamsa, said the government’s reluctance to pay their allowances has caused trainees to face financial hardships and should expedite action.
He said, “As the Vice President has come out, they will be making the payment today. We are just praying and hoping that it will be done, but if it is not done, we will just find another way out. So, when we get to the river, we will cross. It is very, very stressful. We are owing school fees here and there, and it is very, very bad.
“So, if we can get these allowances, it helps us in tackling some of these things. We just plead with the government to make the payment so we can settle our fees and they can allow us to write exams.”
