Some Residents of Gurugu electoral area in the Sagnarigu municipality are without power, following the breakage of some electricity poles that were impacted by a heavy windstorm.
The wind which lasted for some 15 minutes before the beginning of the rain, caused the breakdown of two poles with two others severely impacted due to the pressure caused by the wind.
Areas along the Choggu roundabout through to Gurugu to Kamina Barracks, have been in darkness since 4 pm Wednesday after a windstorm that preceded an hour-long rain forced some electricity poles to break.
An eyewitness who spoke to Citi News recounted how it happened adding that some motorists were adamant about diverting their route to avoid the cables that fell on the road.
Paulina Ngmennasong, Pharmacist technician at Xerion pharmacy recounted the incident to Citi News in an interview stated that “We were in the pharmacy and heard a heavy sound and thought it was our roof, little did we know it was the two electricity poles in front of our pharmacy that fell with electrical cables and gadgets on it.
“Due to that, it affected the whole area and the main road, so the road was blocked, and vehicles couldn’t pass, we tried stopping the riders, but some were adamant.”
According to her some area men came together to use empty drums and sticks to block the road until the electricity company came to take over.
On his part, the assemblyman for the Gurugu electoral area, Alhassan Illiasu who spoke to Citi News commended the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) for the quick intervention and for swiftly being on site to resolve the situation.
He also revealed the contractors have assured residents of their resolve to restore power as soon as practicable.
