The Electoral Commission (EC), has dispelled claims regarding the recruitment of returning officers for the upcoming December 2024 elections.
The commission stated there is no truth in the allegation that it received names of returning officers from district chief executives.
Addressing the media on May 6, Jean Mensa, the Electoral Commissioner, provided clarity on the commission’s hiring practices.
She emphasised the commission’s dedication to laying the groundwork for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
She noted that the commission has now successfully recruited individuals for all 268 district offices nationwide.
For the first time, the EC said, it has established a comprehensive database of these officers, including their names, photographs, Ghana Cards, Voter ID cards, and residential addresses, moving beyond the previous paper-based system.
“Therefore, I would like to mention that there is no truth in the allegation that the commission received names of returning officers from district chief executives etc. In any case, the commission will make and has always made available the names and photographs of its returning officers and deputies to the political parties and any party can object to the names of selected returning officer or deputy,” she stated.
Ms Jean Mensa added that in the event of an objection, the EC is committed to investigating the claims and, if found true, will disengage the candidate in question.
“The commission on receiving the objection will institute an investigation and if the allegations are found to be true, that candidate will be disengaged,” she added.
