Maximus Amertogoh, a Digital Marketing Strategist and Tech Analyst, is championing the integration of locally made products into the e-commerce industry in Ghana.
The industry is currently facing challenges due to the exit of approximately ten multinational corporations from the country.
During an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi TV’s The Point of View, Mr. Amertogoh emphasised the importance of incorporating locally made products into the industry as a revenue generation strategy for the nation.
He also advocated for the implementation of policies to oversee the operations of businesses within the e-commerce industry.
“There’s another component of the challenge that we have to look out for, the products that are being sold, are they made-in Ghana? If you go to Makola, you’re chasing out Chinese people for selling products in Ghana. There’s e-commerce component that we must look at.
He further highlighted, “I was excited about Dr Ayim-Darke’s statement of having local policy where government can hand hold some of the local players in the industry. We can excel made-in Ghana products, how Jumia sells made-in Ghana foods, so we can balance things out.
“The food delivery segment, e-commerce is everywhere, it is a curve ball globally. It’s not a profitable market, they are not focusing on that as a big market segment.”
In relation to Glovo’s exit, he expressed that it would not significantly impact the e-commerce market, as their market share within the industry is not well-known to make a case for their absence affecting the sector.
“So across other markets, I’m sure it is very similar and for me Glovo leaving, it’s part of the food delivery service providers but it’s not one in a thousand service providers, because we have the okadas who deliver ‘waakye’ and beans and things for us.
“The issue is that we don’t even know the market share that they hold, because Jumia foods was there before they came. They came around the same period and we have bolt foods. Bolt Foods is still operating in Ghana.
“There are other courier service companies also in that market, there are a chain of other service providers doing the same thing. If we know the market that they control, then we can make a case and say that okay 45% market shareholder holder is leaving Ghana.”
