Dr Jacob Manu, the Acting Head of the Educational Studies Department at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), has called for improved conditions of service for teachers, citing the urgency of the issue.
Emphasising the significance of early education, Dr Manu has also appealed to the government to prioritise the early grade level that feeds into kindergarten, which he considers foundational to education.
He expressed concern over the neglect of pre-school education within the government’s mainstream educational framework, resulting in its reliance on private individuals and consequently poor remuneration for their staff.
Acknowledging the crucial role played by private entities in managing pre-school education, Dr Manu encouraged them to maintain high levels of accountability to their management, staff, and parents, especially as efforts to seek government intervention for better conditions gain momentum.
Dr Manu also urged the Department of Social Welfare and other relevant stakeholders to advocate for improved conditions for pre-school staff.
Highlighting the importance of technology in education, Dr Manu advocated for government investment in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education starting from the pre-school level, cautioning against an overemphasis on senior high levels at the expense of foundational learning.
Regarding the government’s initiatives such as “One Teacher, One Laptop” and “One Student, One Tablet,” Dr Manu has recommended careful implementation to prevent any pushback from stakeholders, advising that lessons be learned from past experiences as the “One Student, One Tablet” policy is rolled out.
