The University of Ghana (UG) has launched the “Legon Leadership Academy (LLA)” initiative in Accra.
The LLA is an initiative aimed at fostering leadership skills among UG’s faculty and staff. The goal is to enhance their work outcomes, allowing them to contribute to UG’s advancement and growth through innovation, particularly in supporting effective teaching and groundbreaking research.
The LLA plans to roll out programmes aimed at nurturing the abilities of potential leaders.
It aims to establish a merit-based programme that concentrates on refining the skills of a group of potential leaders, actively engage these identified potential leaders in university governance and management, facilitate structured leadership and management training programmes, and assist emerging leaders in understanding leadership theories and their practical applications.
At the launch event on Wednesday, May 8, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairperson for the occasion, Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, highlighted that many institutions lack a deliberately planned programme to groom employees for strategic leadership roles.
In an effort to lift UG from this leadership concern, she conceived the idea of establishing the LLA specifically for leadership development.
She emphasised that the LLA also aims to cultivate students’ leadership capabilities, which will supplement the numerous systems and structures already in place, including internship and mentorship programmes, to ensure the comprehensive development of future leaders.
Frederick Attakumah, Executive Vice-President, and Country Director of Asante Gold Corporation stated that the initiative was the most significant contribution any Vice Chancellor could make to the institution.
He underscored the importance of deliberately prioritizing leadership development to ensure that organizational goals are achieved accurately and that their relevance persists.
Prof Gordon S.K. Adika, Team Lead and Dean, School of Education and Leadership, expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for making the initiative possible.
He invited everyone to embrace the motto of the Legon Leadership Academy, “Leading with Integrity, Safeguarding our Future”.
He expressed hope that this would serve as a constant reminder of the collective aspiration to promote the culture of ethical leadership, responsible stewardship, and institutional effectiveness in their communities of practice.
