The Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Abdul-Aziz Ayaba Musah, has called for increased research collaboration to address concerns within the fisheries sector to prevent the collapse of Ghana’s fishing industry.
He emphasised the importance of fostering a sustainable ocean economy and enhancing fisheries, food, and nutrition security in the country.
Speaking during a visit aboard the Dr Fridtjof Nansen research vessel, which recently completed a fisheries resources assessment survey in the Gulf of Guinea and is now in Ghana, the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development highlighted the need to develop institutional and human capacity for fisheries research and management.
“The research conducted by Dr. Nansen provides critical insight into the state of our fish stocks, the health of our marine ecosystem, and the factors influencing their sustainability armed with this knowledge, we can implement evidence-based policies to ensure the long-term viability and protection of our marine environment.
“A unique future of the research vessel is the involvement of local scientists from participating countries. This offers our scientists hands-on training in survey data and analysis, essential for effective fisheries resources management.
“I will use this singular opportunity to encourage these scientists to leverage this opportunity to build their capacity in designing, planning, and executing surveys, as well as in collecting and analysing biological and environmental data for informed policy decisions.”
