Independent agricultural researcher Dr. Faustina Obeng has urged the government to develop robust marketing strategies to enhance the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
According to her, the state support given to marketing services under the scheme was just 1%, underscoring the need for adequate attention to the programme.
Speaking at the Third World Network Africa dissemination workshop in Accra, Dr. Faustina Obeng added that the move would go a long way in addressing food security threats in the country.
“What we see in Ghana is that in periods of production, there is so much glut and a lot of price shortage. And then, a couple of months after that period of production, what we see is that there are massive shortages.
“The few produce that are available witness a lot of price hikes. So we think attention to these marketing services, including especially the warehousing, is very key in connecting places of overproduction to places where there is a lot of demand, but also periods of so much production to periods where the production is not there but then there is a lot of demand.
“This is where we need to make sure that even if we are investing in improving production and productivity, that food becomes available across the entire country and is also available all year round.”
