Onua FM’s morning show host, Captain Smart, was released by police on Thursday evening after his arrest earlier in the day.
The police said Captain Smart was arrested for making remarks considered threatening to peace and security.
He was cautioned for offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace as provided under section 2017 of the Criminal Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Captain Smart’s employers, the Media General Group, defended the morning show host, saying police misinterpreted his comments.
“We are increasingly concerned about the new trend of the arrest of Journalists and media practitioners,” it also said in a statement announcing Captain Smart’s release.
“We are convinced that a careful review of the entire statement made by Captain Smart would reveal that it did not amount to threats to the peace and or stability of the country as claimed by the Ghana Police.”
Captain Smart has courted controversy over the years for being hard on political leaders while speaking about ills in society.
He worked with the Multimedia Group and the Angel Broadcasting Network before working for Media General.
In July 2018, he was arrested for carrying a gun at the New Patriotic Party’s national delegates’ conference grounds in Koforidua.
