Women Advocacy Network (WAN), a social group of young and enterprising women at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has donated teaching and learning materials worth GHc 3,500.00 to the Ayakumaso M/A basic school in the Sunyani West District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The items include chalk, exercise books, textbooks, pens, pencils, mathematic sets, erasers, board instruments and crayons.

WAN, an initiative to advance the cause of women in society say they were motivated to donate to the school as part of their corporate social responsibility to their host community and their desire at helping deprived basic schools in the region.

Presenting the items, President of WAN, Janat Issifu said the gesture was to demonstrate their appreciation to the community for a long-term relationship and affirm their commitment to have a continuous collaboration with the school and community.

“This project is geared towards helping and supporting deprived basic schools in the region to promote the train the required human resource for the nation’s development”, she added.

Ms Issifu said the ‘one help build society’ initiative of the group is aimed at educating women to aspire for leadership positions and contribute to the development of society.

A Senior Lecturer of UENR and coordinator of WAN, Rev. Dr Phillis Opare, encouraged the pupils to take their studies seriously to enable them to achieve academic excellence.

“My advice to you is to concentrate on your school and studies. Watching the numerous movies and soup operas on TV is not good for you”, she noted.

The headmaster of the School, Ebenezer Baah Bentu, who received the items on behalf of the school, thanked the group for the gesture and assured that it would be put to good use.
