A football administrator, Kwabena Adjei Agyapong has called the bluff of people who are claiming local authorities cannot interfere in the activities of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Speaking to Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News, the former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said, even the global football body, FIFA, is scrutinised.
[contextly_sidebar id=”6kW9ucvyf6iya4QatwRFczlKY5JJhg6Y”]“In fact FIFA itself is subjected to the law of the land of where their headquarter is situated and if you can recollect the major problem that happened in FIFA, started because of the work of the public prosecutor in Switzerland and those in America who were furious with the decisions to give the hosting right to Russia and Qatar and who suspected some underhand dealing. If the headquarters of FIFA submit themselves to the laws of the land, how can we sit in Ghana and say that FA whose headquarter is in Accra is cloaked with some cover,” he said.
The government has taken steps to dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
This follows the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ damning exposé on football.
In a statement signed by Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, the government said it is “shocked and outraged” by the contents of the exposé which was premiered at the AICC on Wednesday.
“Having regard to the widespread nature of the apparent rot involving top GFA officials, top NSA officials, match commissioners, football administrators and referees, Government has decided to take immediate steps to have the GFA dissolved. The government will shortly thereafter, announce provisional measures to govern football activity in the country until a new body is duly formed,” the statement said.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) could fight against the government’s attempt to dissolve it, a former minister for youth and sports, Mahama Ayariga, has said.
“To dissolve them is clearly against the constitution of Ghana and I think that the members of the association can actually go to court to get a court order declaring the government’s move as null and void,” he told Citi News.
Thought the rot is within football has been made clear for all to see, Mr Ayariga said it would be more prudent to target the individuals involved.
