The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Attah, has asked district assemblies to arrest and prosecute citizens found dumping refuse into drains.
The sector Minister said his ministry is alarmed at the increasing rate at which people dump refuse into drains constructed along major roads.
According to the Ministry, such bad behaviours are unacceptable and have dire consequences.
[contextly_sidebar id=”f3iCMIgK6iHJwR6Mf7FnBvOW7urJJeEz”]Speaking to Citi News after inspecting some roads within the Ayawaso Central Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Kwesi Amoako Attah asked the authorities to enforce the law to deter people from dumping refuse into drains.
“Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, even Tema, everywhere people dump rubbish into drains, it’s a nationwide problem, particularly the city. It is unfortunate that this time and age people would get up from their houses and throw rubbish into the drain, which blocks the drains and this causes flooding when it rains,” he said.
In May, fourteen people were arraigned before the La Sanitation and Motor Court for indulging in open urination and defecation.
The accused were arrested during an exercise by a task force of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at the Jamestown and the Korle-Gonno beaches and the environs of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC).
The suspects were Nii Narh, Nayo Tetteh, Nii Ardey, Osman Yacub, Afidin Yorba, Mohammed Karim and Tetteh Annan.
The rest were Prince Okeoma, Amina Fuseina, Kojo Agasu, Amofa Samuel, Prince Boateng, Kofi Nsiah and Abednego Hoyomey.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings has also expressed his disappointment in educated citizens who are unable to apply the knowledge to improve the environment.
In the past, the former President stated that, people with limited education conducted themselves more responsibly and protected the environment through clean sanitation habits.
Rawlings, who was speaking at the launch of the ‘Clean Adabraka’ sanitation campaign on suggested that poor sanitation in the country was stifling its development.
