The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhassan Sulemana, has downplayed suggestions that Friday’s clashes between two Muslim factions in Nandom were fuelled by religious differences.
“Realistically, it is not quite related to religion. Even though they have their differences, this incident was not necessitated by the religious people,” Mr. Sulemana said to Citi News.

Reports say some youth from one of the factions was trying to disrupt a marriage between members of the feuding factions.
The two factions are said to have been feuding over the last two years because of the selection of a leader for the central mosque in Nandom.
A committee has since been set up to assess the situation.
Police in the Upper West Region have assured residents of their safety saying the main culprits are being pursued by police.
Upper West Regional Deputy Police Commander, ACP Peter Ndekugri, told Citi News, “as for the identification of the perpetrators, we have identified them. We have 100 percent identified them; from both factions.”
He said the police were only waiting for the committee to finish its work before acting on intelligence.
“We are going to pick them after the committee which has been set has come out with its report, and we engaged the leaders of the so-called factions and we appealed to them to let peace prevail, but we assured them that we are going to gather our informants and pick up those who are committed to the criminal activities and get them arrested.”
