The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), is appealing to the Ministry of Education to reconsider the mode of assessment for the impending teacher licensure examination.
The group has called on the National Teaching Council (NTC) to strike an average mark of 50 percent in all the three papers rather than a 50 percent pass mark for each paper.
[contextly_sidebar id=”R1eXr2F1e3o8rcvDfMdRg30mmIqY1dDq”] Their call comes after weeks of back and forth between some stakeholders in education and the government over the examination.
In an interview with Citi News, Jonathan Apam, President of the Association said the current mode of assessment will not inure to the benefits of the teachers.
“All we are saying is that since it is one professional exam for the license, they should calculate all the marks for all the areas and take a 50 percent and above average from it.”
“What we mean is that, per NTC, if you get 50 in numeracy, 50 in literacy and 40 in competency, it means you have failed. So what we are proposing is instead of taking each aspect, they should calculate all the aspects and a candidate gets about 180, [an average should be calculated], and if the candidate meets 50 percent and above, he or she should be qualified”, he added.
TTAG urges NTC to be lenient with teacher licensure exam
The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), has also urged the Ministry of Education to make the teacher licensing exam more lenient.
In a release after its national delegates’ conference, TTAG asked the National Teachers Council (NTC) to push for a review of how the newly trained are assessed.
“We beseech the Ministry of Education through NTC to reconsider the mode of assessment where newly trained teachers or teacher certificate holders must pass with an average of 50 percent of each of the three papers,” the release said.
The Association also wants the teachers who sit for the exam to be assessed based on their average score in the various tests.
“We also ask that the NTC should rather strike an average mark of 50 percent in all the three papers to determine a candidate’s pass at the end of the examination should the examination come off.”
Exams slated for September 10
The Teachers Licensure examination is finally set to begin with applicants expected to pay a registration fee of GHc220.
It is to be conducted by the National Teaching Council (NTC) and would take place from Monday, September 10 to Wednesday, September 12, 2018, in all Colleges of Education across the country.
The examination applies to all teachers who hold the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or a post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) who want to be employed by the Ghana education service.
According to the National Teaching Council, the purpose of the licensing examination is to enable qualified teachers to acquire a professional license to ply their trade.
