The killing of Umaru Isaiah, a 37-year-old caretaker at Ahanta West District of the Western Region on Saturday, has deepened calls by residents and the Chief of New Amanful, Nana Yeleku Samua, for a Police Station.
Assailants broke through the windows of the house into the caretaker’s room from where he was pursued until he was killed in the master bedroom.
Although some residents suspect robbers to have killed Umaru, also called Kobina, who was found dead in a pool of blood around 7 am on Saturday morning, others are however surprised since not a single item was stolen from the house.
The situation has prompted other residents who spoke to Citi News to ask the police to investigate Umaru’s girlfriend, whose ex-boyfriend had earlier allegedly threatened to kill the two.
Personnel from the Kwesimintsim Police station have conveyed the body to the mortuary when Citi News arrived at the scene.
A co-worker late Isaiah, Richard Nketia who lives a block away told Citi News he was invited to come over by the girlfriend of Isaiah who claims she met the door opened.
“We are construction workers, but before the incident on Saturday, we started some work on Friday which we didn’t finish so the plan was to meet to continue on Saturday. I, therefore, sent a colleague to buy food for me so we call Kobina for us to go. The girlfriend didn’t sleep in the house with him on that day as she came to invite me around 7 am to come with her to Kobina’s house. The reason being that she came to collect money from him but he was not responding even though the door was opened. I was surprised since I expected the girl to rather enter to check on Kobina. I, however, joined her to Kobina’s place and upon checking the master bedroom found Kobina was laying on the bed in a pool of blood with a cut through his shoulder to the chest and another to palm. His pulse was down so we called the Police who came to pick him.”
Brother of late Isaiah, Collins Adamu who had just arrived upon hearing the murder of his brother asked the police to bring the killers to book.
“I was in a car from Accra and realized that I had missed eight calls. I was surprised but it was when I called that they told me my brother had been killed by armed robbers. All that I want is for the government to help find these criminals for them to be imprisoned as we cannot live with such persons in the society since they do not give us peace.”
Auntie Atta, whose brother owns the house the late Isaiah lived in described him as a good man. She said residents of New Amanful are living in a state of fear due to activities of armed robbers.
“Whenever my brother Francis brings goods from abroad, thieves come here. This time around, somebody else came to offload his goods not far from here and the criminals suspected it had come from my brother, hence they were coming to steal. What is going on here is that thieves have besieged this town. We plead with the government to get us a police station and street lights because the town is dark. Electricity supply is not reliable throughout the day.”
New Amanful, Adjoa and Funko are three neighbouring communities without a police station but depends on Apowa or Kwesimistsim police station which is in another district.
The Acting Chief of New Amanful, Nana Yeleku Samua said he has made available a plot of land for the Police Service for the putting up of the Police station.
The Western Regional Police PRO, DSP Olivia Adiku told Citi News the command has already commenced an investigation into the matter.
