Hundreds of residents of the Tatale Sanguli District in the Northern Region have been rendered homeless following a rainstorm that destroyed many homes across the district.
The unfortunate incident which occurred over the weekend destroyed a number of homes and farm products running into thousands of Ghana Cedis.
It also forced many displaced persons to seek shelter with family and friends.
Speaking to Citi News, Napari Prosper who is the District Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said: “We have series of houses that have been ripped off and some school structures. People’s entire structures have been ripped off. The foodstuff stored in their house have been filled with water. Some of the individuals have found themselves lodging with their friends and family relations. Some of the schools have also been affected. We will send some relief items to the affected individuals.”
A few months ago a similar incident occurred in the three regions of the north, leading to the destruction of a total of 15,206 hectares of farmlands in the Upper East Region alone.
The displaced victims, especially the majority of already malnourished children struggled for food.
Water and sanitation facilities were completely destroyed, worsening open defecation in the affected communities while a number of houses collapsed in the process, rendering thousands homeless.
