The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of Police (COP), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah has recounted an increase in the number of men who are motivated to report their abuse due to the fair and impartial adjudication of cases.
According to, the CID boss the misconception of the operation of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), which was formerly called Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU), contributed to keeping men away.
“It was once believed that once you are a man and you are brought to then-WAJU, you can never prove your innocence. The concept was reviewed and the name of the unit was changed into Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and today we have thousands of men who have the confidence to walk to the unit to report of some abuses that they’ve gone through in their homes.”
DOVVSU has reported that there has been an increase in the number of men who are victims of abuse.
As part of activities marking the 20th anniversary since the establishment of the unit COP Addo-Danquah also charged her officers to prioritize the concerns and welfare of their clients.
Over the years, DOVVSU has rendered counselling, legal and other humanitarian services to victims of abuse. However, cultural and religious practices serve as a barrier to reporting some of these cases.
