Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi has urged newly sworn-in Unit Committee Members to collaborate more with Assembly Members to bring development to their respective Electoral Areas.
According to him, development at the local level will not be achieved to its maximum if development agents at the various communities are not in close touch with each other in terms of idea sharing and support.
He described Unit Committee Members as the eye of any local Assembly since they are always on the ground and in the communities to monitor and ensure that projects and policies are implemented effectively.
“The Unit Committee has a wonderful role to play in ensuring development in their various communities. But the Unit Committee Member cannot work without linking up with the Assembly Member. So in terms of respect, in terms of leadership, in terms of direction, the Assembly Member is key and you work with the Assembly Member within your area to bring the needed development to your area,” he admonished.
The Kumasi Mayor made these remarks during the inauguration of Unit Committee Members and the Selection of Representatives for Town Councils at the Manhyia South Sub-Metro in Kumasi.
Mr Assibey Antwi charged the 30 Unit Committee Members who were sworn-in to work diligently in the discharge of their duties since their actions and inactions can help the Assembly or destroy its image as well.
He called on Assembly and Unit Committee Members to team up and educate their community members on the recently passed law that makes the wearing of face mask mandatory as part of measures to contain further spread of coronavirus.
On Revenue mobilization, the Mayor indicated that Unit Committee Members have a key role to play in helping the Assembly gather the needed data to enable revenue officers get the right information especially when dealing with property rates.
The KMA as part of efforts to green and clean the metropolis is undertaking tree planting exercises and has also intensified its sanitation drive to beautify the city.
The KMA Chief Executive urged Unit Committee Members to educate households in their communities on the relevance of tree planting and also encourage them to plant trees to help the Assembly’s project towards cleaning and greening the city.
He also called on the Unit Committee Members to go all out and educate residents to get them to participate in the upcoming nationwide Voter’s Registration exercise.
The KMA now has five sub-metros after five Municipalities were carved off the Assembly.
