The Electoral Commission (EC) says it will declare the results of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections today.
According to the commission, the declaration will bring clarification on who has majority seats in Parliament.
In a press briefing at midnight on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, Chairperson of the Commission Jean Mensa said “We have noticed that there’s been some confusion about the number of seats in Parliament. We assure you that by Wednesday, we will make this information available to you as in the number of seats in Parliament and which political party has the majority in Parliament to put the issue of the number of seats to rest. We are collating this. Currently, the information is going on our website but this is some information we will share with you”.
The EC was expected to declare the 2020 presidential election results at 5pm on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, but extended the timeline.
Already political parties have made their own projections as to who is winning the presidential and parliamentary elections but the EC chairperson Jean Mensa has urged the public to disregard them.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier said its independent collated results show it has grabbed majority of seats in the next Parliament of Ghana.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the other hand urged the public to refute such claims.
EC receives results of 14 out of 16 regions
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission says it has received results from 14 out of the 16 regions, from this year’s general elections.
Out of the number received, the electoral management body says it has officially certified the results from seven regions.
“As we speak, the Commission has received 14 out of the 16 regional results. We have the national collation centre where we have had representatives of the various political parties since yesterday. As the results come in, the party representatives review them against what they themselves have received from the regions and once they are satisfied that the results that have come to us from the regions are a true reflection of what they have received, they then append their signatures to it before the results are brought to my attention. As Returning Officer of the 2020 presidential election, I then certify these results. Out of the 14 results received, we have certified seven up to date”, she noted.
