Government says it is engaging the National Peace Council to find a lasting solution to the disturbances that have characterised Bawku in the Upper East Region, in the past few months.
There were renewed clashes in December last year, following attempts to perform the final funeral rites of a Chief who died about 40 years ago. The incident led to the loss of lives and the destruction of property.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery said there is military reinforcement in the municipality as government engagement continues.
“We have taken some measures to calm the situation. We are aware that this alone is not enough, so we are engaging the Peace Council in the area to bring down tensions.”
Recent tensions can be traced to December 27, 2021, when there was gunfire in parts of the town after attempts to perform the final funeral rites of a Chief who died about 41 years ago.
Several persons have been wounded in recent violence in the town, in addition to a few deaths, including that of a police officer.
